Mechanic/Welder

The Mechanic/Welder is responsible for executing mechanical and welding repairs on machinery and structural elements at the Big Creek storage/shipping facility, ensuring optimal performance and safety. Key responsibilities encompass inspecting equipment, detecting defects, and executing essential mechanical and welding tasks, which include but are not limited to diesel engines of trucks, loaders, and loading equipment.

 Qualifications and Experience:

  • High school diploma or ITVET Class II

  • Technical Certificate or trade qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Welding, or a related field

  • Valid Welding certification

  • Minimum 2-3 years’ experience as a mechanic and/or welder in an industrial environment

  • Proficient in metal fabrication with good welding techniques and able to weld steel, aluminum, and/or stainless steel

  • Experience in bulk material handling, sugar, or port shipping operations is an asset

  • Valid driver’s license, B, B2, B3, C2, E

 Skills and Competencies: 

  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills.

  • Ability to read basic mechanical drawings, schematics, calipers, tape measures, and angle gauges.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, quality manuals, and procedure manuals.

  • Knowledge of industrial safety practices

  • Willingness to occasionally work shifts, weekends, and emergency callouts

  • Physically fit, able to stand for extended periods and to lift heavy items up to 60lbs consistently, able to work in hot, noisy, dusty, outdoor environments, and with moving equipment.

 Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine, preventative, scheduled and corrective maintenance on mechanical equipment including conveyors, silos, loaders, forklifts, jockey truck, tractor trucks, trailers and bowsers according to manufacturer’s specifications.

  • Diagnose, test, adjust, and repair systems of diesel-powered engines.

  • Carry our welding repairs and fabrication works on structural steel, conveyors, chutes, platforms, bins, and shipping equipment.

  • Perform arc, MIG, and/or gas welding as required.

  • Conduct repairs on storage facility, loading docks, gantries, and shipping-related structures.

  • Assist with maintenance of sugar handling and dust control systems.

  • Comply with all workplace health and safety rules, including hot work permits and lockout/tagout procedures.

  • Always use personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Complete and maintain records/logs of repairs and preventative maintenance and work reports accurately.

  • Collaborate with electricians, operators, and supervisors.
